Soft and Mellow Square Penny Rug. This penny rug is made of 100% wool with a cotton backing. It measures 18″ x 18″.
To achieve this beautiful mottled look with color variations, the background wool was hand dyed. The mottled effect has tones of pale pumpkin that are light and dark. (these lines are NOT wrinkles)
The wool chosen has a bit of angora throughout which enhances the soft feel and look. Soft and Mellow Square penny rug has twenty pennies bordering the outer edges.
For the pennies three colors were chosen.
First the largest is dark chocolate measuring 2 1/4″ in diameter.
Second the center penny is mocha measuring 1 1/2″ in diameter. Finally the smallest penny measuring 3/4″ is spicy vanilla.
All stitching of the wool is done with perle cotton embroidery floss.
The backing is 100% cotton. It wraps around to the front, where it is hand sewn in place.
Soft and Mellow Square Penny Rug can be used in many ways. It makes a gorgeous backdrop centerpiece with many items. Such as a background for a wooden bowl with a birds nest inside.
For an attractive vintage vignette, I used a yellow ware bowl filled with vintage utensils, accented by a covered rolling pin.
For a more modern look, try a glass dish with fruit.
Consequently, the possibilities are endless, which is why I love to use penny rugs in my decorating. One simple change can give you a completely different look.
One of a kind. Dry clean only.
About Penny Rugs
This is a traditional craft dating back to the mid 19th century. Scraps of wool and suits were used to create rugs for the table. The term penny comes from the fact that women used coins to trace the circles.
Also used were a variety of shapes, such as dogs, flowers, birds and much more. Although penny rugs are primarily seen in primitive settings surrounded by antiques and collectibles throughout the home, they are also a work of art.
Having said that they can viewed as a work of art in a contemporary setting, due to the simplicity and depth of colors.
